British Museum Top 20 15-1 Blue Egyptian Hippos  [23 of 30]

15. Blue Egyptian Hippo - 1800 BC. Many small figures of hippos have been found in tombs, possibly buried with the dead so they could be hunted in the after-life. The male hippo was associated with the god Seth and was considered a bad omen, but the female hippo was associated with Taweret, the goddess of childbirth and protector of both mother and baby.
